Deakin Cottage

Deakin Cottage provides a safe and stimulating home environment for people who are frail aged or have dementia, so their carers can have a break.

Located in Deakin, The Cottage provides innovative, occupational activities. It is a home away from home which focuses on activities and building friendships to ensure guests feel welcome and stimulated.

Respite at The Cottage gives carers an opportunity to enjoy a break while secure in the knowledge that the person they care for is safe and enjoying the many things to do. Some of the activities at The Cottage include:

  • cooking meals
  • gardening
  • high tea on the patio
  • flower pressing
  • baking
  • basketball
  • feeding the chickens

As The Cottage caters for no more than eight guests, we are able to provide each with a personalised experience, giving them the attention and care needed for an enjoyable and beneficial stay.

While The Cottage provides a stimulating environment, we also organise day trips. Guests can enjoy fishing trips, visits to multicultural institutions (the War memorial is a favourite) and special outings to Floriade and other community events. Through our Host Family Program we can also arrange day respite where one of our professional carers looks after your cared for person in their home.

Results of a recent survey taken from families using The Cottage program showed that the service is highly-rated by carers with one describing it as,

“unique in the ACT and maybe Australia – a model that needs to be replicated”

Our Cottage staff

Our staff are professional, warm and welcoming, and have had dementia-specific training. They all have experience and training in administering the services included in the program:

  • personal care
  • medication administration
  • continuation of some community services the care recipient is receiving at home
  • transport

Access to respite

First, a referral is made to the program so the carer’s and recipient’s needs can be assessed. After evaluation, availability of the program is advised to the carer, and if the days requested have no vacancy, then we will assist with other options.

Call us to find out how you can obtain a referral.

Also, assessment, coordination, monitoring and review occur regularly to ensure the respite our guests receive continues to be appropriate. If the guest is reassessed as high care and therefore no longer eligible to attend the Cottage, our staff will assist you to find appropriate respite and refer you to alternative programs.

Half day stay $10.00 per half day (5 hours or less)
