Thanks to everyone who championed carers during the ACT election
With the election concluded, everyone here at Carers ACT extends our heartfelt thanks to everyone, especially those in our caring community, who got involved in our campaign to secure essential promises for carers across the ACT. These efforts have brought new hope to the 58,000+ carers who can now look forward to improved recognition and understanding in the community, at their places of work, and while interacting with services.
Our campaign focused on eight core asks to support carers across the region:
- Carer Recognition Card: A government-issued, non-means-tested card to verify carer status, provide recognition, and foster community connection.
- Review of the Mental Health Act: A full review to include carer rights and ensure better care integration.
- Carer Directed Wellbeing and Respite Packages: Funding for Carers ACT to distribute respite and wellbeing packages.
- Carer Wellbeing and Respite Centre: Land to build a purpose-built centre for carers offering respite, services, and community support.
- Young Carer Mentoring Program: Support for young carers to continue their education and employment while building financial security.
- Carer Bereavement Counselling: Specific support for carers exiting their roles due to bereavement.
- Integrated Mental Health Centre: A central hub for mental health care, navigation, and respite, benefitting carers and those they care for.
- Dedicated Mental Health Prevention Funding: A commitment of 20% of the ACT mental health budget to prevention and early intervention.
Our election scorecard, which highlighted each party’s commitment to these asks, demonstrated significant support for carers from several parties. We especially thank those who pledged to make carers a priority, and we encourage the new government to bring these commitments to life. The scorecard with party commitments is available below.
Thank you to everyone who stood with us. Your support has set the stage for continued progress for the carers of the ACT. For further information please contact carer.advocacy@carersact.org.au
