Mental Health Carers Voice (MHCV), the peak program representing mental health carers and run by Carers ACT, is targeting a 20% increase in carers reporting inclusion, respect, and improved communication with mental health services in the ACT by 2027.

MHCV’s new strategic plan, officially launched by Mental Health Minister Emma Davidson on Tuesday, outlines a clear roadmap to ensure that mental health carers are better recognised, valued, and included in the ACT.

“This plan prioritises giving carers a voice in decisions that affect them. It will ensure their needs are met by the services they interact with. We also want carers to have the choice to take part in nourishing activities, whether that be work, study, or a walk in the park when they want to,” said Ms Lisa Kelly, CEO of Carers ACT.

Alongside these priorities, MHCV is committed to enhancing the capability and confidence of carers to navigate the mental health system and care for their loved ones effectively.

“Family and friend carers often feel stressed, alone, and overlooked in the mental health system,” shared Ms Kelly. “Balancing their own needs with caring responsibilities takes a toll on their wellbeing.”

Ms Kelly expressed the vision behind the peak body’s work: “Canberra’s carers have told us that they want to be respected as partners in the recovery journey.”

“We’re dedicated to working with the sector to ensure this plan translates into meaningful action,” added Ms Kelly.
