Support Groups

Carer support groups allow carers to meet on a regular basis to discuss their caring role, socialise, share information and offer each other support.

Support groups are a tried and true way of providing emotional, physical, educational and social support. They are valuable for carers as they offer you connection with other carers who may have similar experiences and enable you to share knowledge about services, tips and tricks. It’s always a relief to know you’re not alone.

Our groups are also safe spaces to share your story where there is no judgement, only a willingness to support each other.

A group facilitator ensures privacy and confidentiality while guiding each session.

Facilitators might also help keep members up-to-date with new developments or arrange guest speakers on topics of interest to the group.

A Group Just Right for You

Online Peer Support

If you want to talk to other carers but find it hard to leave the house or your loved one, Carers Gateway website offers an online community forum – a safe, anonymous space to connect with other carers and support each other.

Northside Carers Support Group

This is a monthly meeting for all carers located on the north side of the ACT.  The group is usually held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Carers ACT Holt office.

Mental Health Carer Support Groups

The Mental Health Carer program hosts two carer support groups a month, one located on the north side of Canberra and one on the south side of Canberra. These groups provide an opportunity for carers to talk freely about how their caring situation impacts on their life.

Mature Carers Group

A group of carers over the age of 45 caring for adults with disabilities, particularly their own children. The group meets on the second Wednesday of each month to share experiences of their caring role, including working with the NDIS. The group will sometimes meet more regularly to discuss changes happening in the sector or to host a guest speaker.

Male Carers Support Group

A monthly support group for male carers run by experienced group facilitator, Neil Millar. The group meets on a Tuesday, after work hours from 5:30 – 7:00pm. This is an open group, and participants are free to come in and out of the group at any time. You may wish to come every month or join only on the dates that work for you. To register your interest, please click here and further information will be sent to you.

Nguluway Cultural Art Group

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family carers are invited to come together to meet new people and yarn. This fortnightly group explores a range of cultural activities and painting.

Activities are planned by our Coordinators in consultation with group members. The group runs the forth Friday of the month from 11am to 2pm at our premises in Holt.  Art materials and a light lunch are supplied.

Our first group project involved painting a beautiful set of canvas murals based on each carer’s Dreaming journey. These  now hang in our Holt offices opposite our main meeting rooms.

Cultural Social Support Groups

We also have a number of cultural social support groups that meet regularly, and organise activities together such as arts & crafts, clay making, Zumba sessions, educational talks and group outings around Canberra. Our cultural support groups are a great way to meet new friends and stay connected with a community who share similar experiences, language and culture. To join any of these groups, please contact Cristina Morgado at cristina.morgado@carersact.org.au.
